The federal criminal case against Filipina nurse practitioner Marizel Yukee will move into its next phase with a pretrial conference scheduled for July 31 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
Yukee was arrested in Houston, Texas, after a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging her with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and healthcare fraud, healthcare fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States, money laundering, and violations of the federal Anti-Kickback Statute.
During her initial court appearance, Yukee pleaded not guilty to all charges. The court ordered her released under strict conditions, including home detention, electronic GPS monitoring, surrender of her passport, and a substantial bond while awaiting trial.
Federal prosecutors allege that Yukee orchestrated a $906 million Medicare and TRICARE fraud scheme through four wound care clinics operating in Texas, Nevada, California, and Hawaii. According to the indictment, the alleged scheme involved billing federal healthcare programs for medically unnecessary amniotic wound allografts, falsifying medical records, and paying illegal kickbacks for patient referrals. Prosecutors claim the alleged fraud resulted in approximately $297 million in payments from Medicare and TRICARE.
The July 31 pretrial conference will allow the judge, prosecutors, and defense attorneys to address pending legal issues, review the status of the case, and determine the next steps before trial. No determination of guilt or innocence will be made during the hearing.
Yukee remains under home detention pending further court proceedings. As with all criminal defendants, she is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
