What was supposed to be a small relief turned into a heartbreaking tragedy.

A motorcycle rider died while waiting in line for a ₱5,000 fuel subsidy at the Quezon City Circle on Saturday collapsing under the scorching heat as he struggled to secure much-needed assistance for his family.

According to his relatives, the victim is believed to have suffered a heart attack, possibly triggered by extreme exhaustion and the intense midday sun.

As early as dawn, hundreds of drivers had already lined up, hoping to receive financial aid amid soaring fuel prices tied to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Witnesses said the heat was unbearable. Some riders, desperate to endure the long wait, used pieces of cardboard as makeshift umbrellas doing everything they could just to stay in line.

But for one man, the wait proved fatal.

The tragedy has sparked grief and outrage, as many question the conditions faced by those forced to endure long hours in extreme heat just to receive basic assistance.

Following the incident, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian ordered immediate coordination with the victim’s family.

Authorities have since reached out to the victim’s child and assured assistance for funeral arrangements, along with additional support for the bereaved family.

Behind the numbers and the lines is a painful reality for many, survival itself has become a daily struggle.
