A 40-year-old man consumed by jealousy burned down his own house and took his life in the process after a heated argument with his wife in Barangay Nuevo Iloco, Mawab, Thursday afternoon, October 23, 2025.
Authorities identified the suspect as Johnny Arayan, who reportedly lost control during a fit of jealousy while under the influence of alcohol. Police reports stated that he and his wife, Anna Marie, argued around 2 p.m. after he accused her of being unfaithful.
Witnesses said the confrontation intensified until Arayan stormed into their home, grabbed a container of gasoline, and set the house on fire. As the flames spread rapidly, his wife fled to her parents’ home nearby to seek help.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and battled the blaze for several hours before they managed to contain it. By the time the fire was extinguished, the house was completely destroyed and Arayan had suffered severe burns.
The suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead. Investigators said the man’s intoxicated state and intense jealousy triggered his violent outburst that ultimately cost him his life.
Based on data from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the total damage from the incident reached ₱600,000. The fire left the victim’s wife homeless and traumatized by the tragedy.
Police are treating the case as a domestic incident rooted in jealousy and alcohol abuse. Local authorities are also urging the public to seek help or intervention in cases of domestic disputes before they escalate into deadly situations.
