NEW JERSEY — The Borough of Bergenfield has announced the passing of former Mayor Robert Rivas on April 23, 2026. He was 78.

Rivas made history as the first Filipino American to serve as mayor of Bergenfield, holding office from 1999 to 2003.

Bergenfield Mayor Arvin Amatorio paid tribute to Rivas, describing him as “a pioneer, a mentor, and a friend to so many.”

“Rivas broke barriers and paved the way for future generations, showing what is possible through dedication and service. While he was a proud trailblazer for the Filipino community, his leadership always embraced the entire Borough. He served everyone with humility and heart. On behalf of the Borough of Bergenfield, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. His legacy will continue to inspire us all,” Amatorio said.

Rivas’ election marked a milestone for Filipino American representation, inclusion, and progress in local government.

Even after his mayoral tenure, Rivas remained active in public service. He served as chairman of the Bergenfield Planning Board, helping guide the borough’s growth and development.

He also chaired the board of the Filipino American Legal Education Defense Fund (FALDEF), a nonprofit organization advocating for legal awareness and support within the community.

An immigration lawyer by profession, Rivas was known for his wit, jovial personality, and deep commitment to the Filipino community. In his later years, he continued his work with FALDEF, offering legal guidance to those in need.

At a legal forum in 2024, Rivas warned of a potential crackdown on immigrants in the United States and raised concerns about threats to due process. He emphasized the importance of knowing one’s rights and ensuring access to legal assistance.

Filipino community leader Ludi Hughes also paid tribute, writing on Facebook:

“Goodbye and may you rest in peace. Your life was defined by integrity, kindness, and a lasting impact on others. We celebrate your selfless service, dedication to your family, and your commitment to the community. You were an example to many and left a lasting impression on those around you.”

Rivas leaves behind a legacy of public service, advocacy, and leadership that helped open doors for future generations of Filipino Americans in government.
