Filipino-American leaders unite in Alaska during Filipino American History Month


Filipino-American leaders from across Alaska came together in Fairbanks for the state’s first Alaska Filipino Leadership Convening, a milestone gathering that celebrated community, culture and leadership during Filipino American History Month.
Held Oct. 2 and 3, the two-day event brought together representatives from nine Filipino organizations across Alaskaunder the theme, “Lifting Filipino Voices: Strengthening Community Connections.” The gathering aimed to build stronger ties among Filipino communities spread across the state and create more opportunities for collaboration.
Organized by the Filipino American Society of Fairbanks, the convening highlighted the strength of bayanihan and the importance of preserving Filipino culture for future generations.
Community leaders shared ideas on youth engagement, cultural education, leadership development and ways to support Filipinos living in different parts of Alaska.
Alaska State Rep. Genevieve Mina joined the gathering and emphasized the value of connecting Filipino organizations statewide. The event also highlighted the long history of Filipinos in Alaska, including generations of Filipino workers who contributed to the state’s fishing and cannery industries.
The convening carried special meaning as it coincided with Filipino American History Month, observed every October across the United States to recognize the history, achievements and contributions of Filipino Americans.
The celebration continued with the Filipino American Society of Fairbanks’ annual cultural event, featuring Filipino food, performances, vendors and community activities.
Participants also took part in a screening of the Alaska-produced documentary “Bridging Our Stories,” which explores Filipino experiences and heritage in the state.
Organizers said the successful gathering is expected to lead to continued cooperation among Filipino groups and future statewide activities.
The inaugural convening marked a positive new chapter for Alaska’s Filipino-American community, bringing leaders together with a shared goal of strengthening connections, celebrating heritage and inspiring the next generation.
