ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — Filipino American representation is entering the 2026 race for Virginia’s 8th Congressional District, as Republican candidate Luke Nathan Phillips challenges longtime incumbent Rep. Don Beyer.

Phillips, 32, an Arlington-based writer, outdoorsman, and civic activist, traces his roots to the Philippines through his mother, an immigrant who helped shape his upbringing and values. His candidacy adds to the growing presence of Filipino Americans seeking public office across the United States.

Running on a platform centered on conservation, protection of public lands, and bipartisan civic engagement, Phillips is aiming to appeal to a broad coalition of voters in a district long considered a Democratic stronghold.

He is expected to compete in the Republican primary ahead of the general election, where Beyer has held the seat since 2015.

Phillips has emphasized the need to bridge political divides and restore trust in public institutions, while also highlighting his passion for environmental stewardship—an issue he says transcends party lines.

His campaign comes at a time when Filipino Americans continue to expand their footprint in U.S. politics, with more candidates stepping forward to represent their communities and advocate for inclusive leadership.

Virginia’s 8th District, which includes Arlington, Alexandria, and parts of Fairfax County, remains a challenging battleground for Republican candidates. Still, Phillips’ entry introduces a fresh narrative one that blends heritage, civic engagement, and a call for bipartisan solutions.
