Fil-Am nurse murder case pushed back nearly three years after killing

The murder trial of the man accused of kidnapping and killing Filipino-American nurse Melissa Jubane has been delayed yet again, pushing the case to September 7, 2027 — nearly three years after her death.

Bryce Schubert, Jubane’s former neighbor in Beaverton, faces charges of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree abuse of a corpse. He has pleaded not guilty and remains presumed innocent.

The latest postponement marks another major setback in the long-running case. The trial had previously been scheduled for September 2025, then moved to March 2026, later to March 2027, before being pushed back once more to September 2027.

The latest delay came after Schubert retained a new defense team, whose attorneys sought more time because of a scheduling conflict and the need to prepare for trial.

Jury selection is now expected to begin on August 31, 2027.

Jubane, 32, was a cardiac nurse at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. She was reported missing on September 4, 2024, after she failed to report for her morning shift.

Police later arrested Schubert, who lived in the same apartment complex. Jubane’s remains were subsequently recovered.

Her death drew widespread attention in Oregon and among the Filipino-American community, particularly because Jubane had married her longtime partner, Bryan Llantero, in Hawaii just days before she disappeared.

Prosecutors have alleged that Schubert acted in a “deliberately cruel” manner and used a weapon. Those allegations have not yet been proven in court.

The repeated postponements have frustrated supporters of Jubane, including Filipino community groups that have continued attending hearings and calling for justice.

With the trial now set for September 2027, Jubane’s family and supporters face another year-long wait before the case is expected to go before a jury.
