Biri Rocks Earn National Geological Monument Status, Boosting Eco-Tourism in Northern Samar

The Provincial Government of Northern Samar, under the leadership of Governor Harris Ongchuan, proudly announces a historic milestone in the province’s ongoing mission to champion sustainable tourism, environmental stewardship, and inclusive development.


On November 19, 2025, the Biri Rock Formations were officially declared a National Geological Monument, a recognition formally transmitted by the National Committee on Geological Sciences (NCGS) during a ceremony at the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Main Building, North Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City.


Signed by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Raphael Lotilla, this national designation affirms that the Biri Rock Formations stand among the Philippines’ most exceptional natural heritage sites. The recognition highlights the formations’ remarkable geological significance sculpted by tectonic movements, powerful ocean waves, and natural weathering over millions of years while celebrating their breathtaking beauty that continues to attract tourists, geologists, researchers, and conservation advocates from across the country and around the world.


This milestone marks a major achievement not only for the Municipality of Biri but for the entire province of Northern Samar. It strengthens the shared commitment of both national and local governments to protect, preserve, and responsibly promote this globally significant natural wonder. With this designation, the Biri Rock Formations join an elite list of geological monuments in the Philippines, further elevating Northern Samar as a leading destination for sustainable and environmentally conscious tourism.


The Provincial Government of Northern Samar and the Local Government Unit of Biri express deep gratitude to the NCGS, the DENR, and partner agencies whose expertise and unwavering support made this recognition possible.
