The Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. has issued a public warning to the Filipino community in the United States amid the spread of false information on social media regarding dual citizenship and the travel rights of U.S. Green Card holders.
In an official statement, the Embassy clarified that there have been no changes in U.S. government policy concerning the rights of dual citizens or lawful permanent residents (LPRs) to travel internationally. The misinformation, which has been circulating widely on social media platforms, has caused confusion and anxiety among Filipinos residing in the U.S.
“We urge the Filipino community to verify information through official government sources, avoid sharing unverified content, and report false information to the platform where it is published,” the Embassy stated.
The advisory comes after several Filipinos reportedly considered renouncing their Philippine citizenship out of fear of losing U.S. residency privileges—an action the Embassy warned against.
“Please do not make legal decisions, such as renouncing your Philippine citizenship, based on social media content. Renunciation of Philippine citizenship is a serious, irreversible legal action,” the statement added.
Community leaders and immigration lawyers echoed the Embassy’s call, urging Filipinos to remain calm and seek reliable information from official channels such as the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Philippine Embassy, or the nearest Philippine Consulate General.
For inquiries or clarification, members of the public are encouraged to reach out directly to Philippine diplomatic posts across the U.S.
