The United Nations in the Philippines on Monday pledged its support for communities devastated by the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao, saying it is working closely with government authorities and humanitarian partners to assess the full extent of the disaster and coordinate recovery efforts.
In a statement, the U.N. expressed solidarity with victims and families affected by the earthquake, which caused widespread destruction to homes, buildings, and critical infrastructure across several areas in Southern Mindanao.
"The United Nations in the Philippines extends its deepest sympathies to the people of Mindanao and other affected areas following the devastating earthquake on 8 June," the organization said.
"We mourn the loss of lives and the suffering endured by families and communities due to widespread damage to homes and infrastructure, and we stand in solidarity with all those affected during this difficult time."
The U.N. commended the swift actions of national and local authorities, as well as the tireless efforts of emergency responders, medical teams, and volunteers conducting rescue and relief operations in affected communities.
"Together with the government and partners, we are assessing the earthquake's impact and remain ready to support response and recovery efforts," the statement said.
The organization also paid tribute to first responders and humanitarian workers who have been working around the clock to save lives and deliver aid to survivors.
As emergency operations continue, the United Nations reaffirmed its commitment to helping the Philippines recover from the disaster and strengthen its resilience against future natural hazards.
The earthquake has triggered large-scale response efforts across Mindanao, with authorities continuing search-and-rescue operations, damage assessments, and the distribution of emergency assistance to affected residents.
The U.N. said it remains prepared to assist the Philippine government in both immediate humanitarian relief and long-term rehabilitation programs aimed at rebuilding communities and enhancing disaster preparedness in vulnerable areas.
